Why You Need An Esthetician to Recommend Skincare

Estheticians have a deep understanding of how the skin functions and know how to appropriately recommend the right skincare.

Esthetician's train for over 600 hours and see hundreds of types of skin combinations. There are many people who don’t know what an esthetician is or what we do. There are also many that know what we do but don’t realize the value that they can gain from having an esthetician in their life. Now more than ever, estheticians are important with the overwhelming amount of skincare products out on the market and also the growing amount of skin problems we are experiencing as our diets and lifestyles have changed in modern society. It can be confusing and even frustrating shopping for skincare, especially when we have specific concerns or conditions we are trying to treat.

You don’t have to do it alone! Finding an esthetician can help guide you by recommending products, creating a regimen, and performing effective treatments to help you achieve the skin you want to be in.

Dermatology or Aesthetics

If you are dealing with a severe skin issue or diseases such as dermatitis, psoriasis, or vitiligo you would want to see a dermatologist rather than an esthetician. It is important to visit a dermatologist regularly to check for signs of skin cancer. While licensed estheticians can help you to keep the skin functioning properly by identifying skin conditions. Think of seeing an esthetician as your regular monthly maintenance and visiting a dermatologist as a yearly medical examination.

Estheticians Know The Skin

In school, estheticians learn the skin and facial sciences which include the biology of the skin, skincare ingredients, and professional skincare treatments. Estheticians have a deep understanding of how the skin functions, therefore understanding how to treat the skin when there are imbalances that present themselves as skin conditions like acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and more. I find myself helping my clients change their minds around how to care for their skin. Many people ask for skincare recommendations from others like their friends or family. This mentality that one routine or product will work for you if it works for someone else is not realistic.

Everyone has different skin types, skin tones, conditions, and concerns when it comes to their skin. An esthetician will be able to evaluate your skin through a skin analysis and identify what it is that your skin needs, as well as carefully construct a regimen and treatment plan that is designed for you.

Some skincare treatments that estheticians are trained to perform include…

  • Facials

  • Chemical peels

  • Microdermabrasion

  • Waxing services

  • Micro-needling

  • Laser treatments; like laser hair removal and derma planing if they are working under a medical physician.

I have had a lot of clients over the years that initially came in for treatments to relax. Spa treatments like facials are extremely relaxing and may seem like a luxury service to pamper oneself. Many also regularly see estheticians as they start to become fed up with skin conditions like acne or aging. We often want to start taking care of our skin once there is a problem. As an esthetician, I want to encourage you to take care of your skin, not as a luxury or when there is an issue but for your skin’s overall wellness and you will have a much better chance of avoiding unwanted skin issues.

Taking Care of Your skin

The skin has been referred too as the largest organ of our bodies. I think about it as even more than that. The Integumentary System (our skin) is made up of several organs within the system that serves to protect the body. Our skin is made up of blood vessels, sensory receptors, and glands. The main function of our skin is to protect our bodies from danger, like injury and infection. Since it is an excretory system; meaning we eliminate certain substances or even toxins through our skin, it can become irritated or inflamed easily. Keeping the skin functioning in a healthy manner is extremely important not only for our image but for our health as well, estheticians are here to help you do that!
