Skincare You Should Use in 40s

It has been said that 40 is the new 30, and my theory is that this is partly due to the popularity and advancements in skincare today! Caring for your skin is essential throughout the entire life cycle but especially so in the 40’s because this is the point at which we start seeing rapid skin changes as our past catches up to us!

Exfoliate Regularly To Help With Aging Skin

The average cellular turnover where all of our dead skin cells slough off and are replaced with new skin cells is a 28-day cycle when we are teens. However, this slows down over time as we age to about every 45-60 days by our 40’s. This means we have dead skin build-up which leads to dullness and dry skin that doesn’t allow skincare to penetrate. This is why it is crucial to exfoliate the skin regularly.

You can use a mild chemical exfoliant on a daily basis such as AHAs, Retinol in the evening (acclimate your skin slowly), or a rice powder polish a few times a week. Consulting with an esthetician is recommended to find the best exfoliating option for you and your skin type.

Protect Your Skin From Further Damage and Use SPF Daily

Skin can become more reactive and sensitive as we age, especially because we tend to be a bit dryer in our 40’s than we previously were. Just like at any other age SPF is the most important product to use on a daily basis. A mineral or physical SPF is best for sensitive skin and SPF 30 or higher is ideal.  You should also protect your skin from cold and windy weather that can compromise your skin, increase inflammation, and lead to accelerated aging.

Aging Skin Requires More Moisture and Hydration

As we age our oil production slows and we begin to lose moisture and hydration. This means it is important to moisturize twice a day to replenish these stores and nourish our skin. Your moisturizer can provide both moisture (oil) and hydration (water) depending on its ingredients.

Ingredients like jojoba oil, squalane are great for moisture retention and hyaluronic acid for hydrating the skin. Don’t forget to moisturize the under-eye area as well as long as it’s a gentle moisturizer or an eye cream. You should also drink plenty of spring water (preferably natural spring water) to hydrate internally and aid in the body's detoxification process.

Use Skincare with Age Preserving Ingredients

In previous blogs, I have talked about adding in a Vitamin C in your 20s and Retinol in your 30s. These are ingredients that you should continue using in your 40s, along with other protective and restorative ingredients such as vitamin E, Niacinamide, Glutathione, and Reservatrol.  Although these ingredients may not reverse the skin damage you already have it will preserve the youth you have and prevent further collagen degradation which is the cause of fine lines and wrinkles.

You can always chat with a Pomp esthetician about what skincare is best for you and what to start incorporating in your 40's.
