Skincare Treatments for Blackheads

Do you have blackheads? Do you know do you treat blackheads? We are here to help you identify if you have blackheads and skincare tips on how to treat clogged pores and those pesky blackheads.

I can’t begin to count how many clients have asked me what to do to get rid of their blackheads. Blackheads are an extremely common skin concern especially in acne-prone skin, but they are actually not quite as common as people think. Many times after hearing a client complain about their blackheads, upon further examination, it turns out they are talking about sebaceous filaments and don’t actually have blackheads at all.

Sebaceous Filaments vs. Blackheads

Sebaceous filaments are a normal and healthy component of our skin. They are made up of the skin's natural oils and help direct the natural flow of oil from the pore. Blackheads on the other hand are clogged pores and occur when the pore fills with sebum, dead skin, dirt, and bacteria. Sebaceous filaments can have a similar appearance to blackheads as when the skin's natural oil or sebum is oxidized at the surface of the pore it turns to a darker tan or greyish color.

Causes of Non-Inflamed Acne

As mentioned previously on the Pomp Beauty Blog, acne is a genetic condition called retention hyperkeratosis that causes an accelerated skin cell turnover rate, leading to excess dead skin clogging the pores along with trapped sebum, debris, and bacteria. There are triggers that exacerbate the condition including; pore-clogging ingredients in makeup, skincare, haircare, and laundry products. It is important to identify and eliminate pore-clogging ingredients that you may be used in your everyday life.

Treatment for Sebaceous Filaments and Blackheads

1. Exfoliation

A consistent and effective skincare regimen is crucial in achieving and maintaining clear pores. Regular exfoliation is a key component of ridding the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and ensuring the pores do not clog. Non-inflamed acne can benefit from both chemical and physical exfoliation methods. Chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs are necessary and extremely beneficial not only for acne-prone skin but for concerns like aging and hyperpigmentation. When considering non-inflamed acne; blackheads, clogged pores, and comedones specifically respond well to salicylic acid and glycolic acid. Salicylic acid works wonders for acne and oily skin because it can cut through oil and reach inside the pore to exfoliate. Glycolic acid is great for those with thick and tolerant skin, as it penetrates the skin the deepest and quickest. AHA and BHA formulations most often include cleansers, toners, and serums. I recommend using a leave-on AHA or BHA treatment like a toner and serum rather than a cleanser formulation that is rinsed off. Retinol or Vitamin A serums work similarly in the skin as it aids in sloughing off dead skin.

Although chemical exfoliation is the most effective way to clear the pores, a scrub as a second cleanse a few times a week is a great way to achieve a deeper cleanse as well as exfoliate. When choosing a scrub, be sure that it is not too abrasive and that the abrasive particles are round in shape, meaning they will not be too harsh and won’t cause micro-tears in the skin like sugar, fruit seeds or nuts can. Jojoba beads, silica, or oatmeal are usually gentle abrasives you can rely on when utilized in a well-formulated scrub.

2. Extractions

Both blackheads and sebaceous filaments can be extracted. Blackheads should be professionally extracted as they are blockages within the pore and can cause irritation and inflammation. The filaments however are not necessary to extract but it is okay to have them extracted, note they will reappear within a month of being extracted. I always recommend having your extractions done monthly by a professional, but if you simply can’t help yourself here are a few tips…

  • Either wrap your fingers in tissues or use a medical grade extraction tool.

  • Be gentle with your skin; firm pressure is okay but never dig into the skin.

  • Set a timer of 5 minutes or less, this will ensure you do not lose track of time and cause too much damage.

  • Using the right skincare products will make extractions easier and quicker.

If you are prone to congestion and clogged pore, professional treatments like facials with extractions, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion can be amazing clearing the pores and improving the overall texture and appearance of your skin. It is also extremely helpful to consult with a skincare professional that can lead you in the right direction of effective skincare products and a consistent regimen to follow.
